Baroquerie
These works take European signifiers of status and authority as their subject matter; frescos, ceilings and Baroque/Rococo architectural spaces. This era is often portrayed as decadent and indulgent, but its exuberance and its opposition to strict Classical rules is enormously appealing. The works are intended to capture this dichotomy.
I use a range of painting techniques, employing characteristics of modernist painting (gestural mark making, grid structures, pictorial flatness, close-cropping and photographic blur/sharpness) that sets the Baroque subject matter in a contemporary context.
